Birding Walk at Lake Lure
Monday July 6 7:30 am Duration: 2 hrs
Meet at the Lake (downtown) by the playground

Welcome back! The birds are as happy as we are that we have a full lake.
Join at any time it's not too far of a walk to find binocular toting bird nerds if you just can't make the early 7:30. But the early birder does get the best views and chirps.
All levels welcome. Hopefully the Common Merganser will still be there with her 5 growing up fast juveniles. Or perhaps an Osprey or Eagle flyby.
Please RSVP to julsky18@gmail.com. Be sure to RSVP so Julie can communicate in the event of a date change due to weather issues.
Water sports- Lake James Paddle!
Thursday July 9 8:30 am

We have our first "out of the area" paddle trip at Lake James, northeast of Marion, one of the premier paddling destinations in western North Carolina, offering more than 6,800 acres of remarkably clear water surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains and over 150 miles of scenic shoreline. Interested paddlers will rendezvous near Rumbling Bald at 8:30am for the approximate one-hour drive. We will launch from the beach, explore nearby coves and islands, and enjoy a BYO packed lunch on Bootstrap Island.
RSVP to Joe at joekager@gmail.com and additional details will be provided.
Vista Seekers Hike
Mount Mitchell-Choose your Adventure!
Tuesday July 14 Rain Date TBD
Meet at parking lot in front of the Arcade building downtown LL

We’re excited to host these hikes at Mount Mitchell, the tallest peak east of the Mississippi River at 6,684 feet. With two hike options, more members can join!
Option 1: Meet us in the upper parking lot and hike to the summit observation deck via the Balsam Nature Trail. This hike is about 1 mile with 154ft of elevation gain.
Option 2: Join us for a shuttle hike beginning at the Mount Mitchell State Park Headquarters parking lot, following the Commissary and Camp Alice trails. The hike starts at 6,100 feet and includes a short downhill section before a steeper final climb to the summit. Once there, we will meet the other group and continue to the summit observation deck via the Balsam Nature Trail. The summit offers 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains. This is a 3-mile hike with 1,000 feet of elevation gain, most of it in the final mile. It is rated Moderate on AllTrails, but the elevation and rugged terrain may make it feel more strenuous. This is not a beginner hike; the uphill portion is challenging, and much of the trail is covered with roots and rocks.
After the hikes, we will have a bring-your-own lunch at the picnic area near the upper parking lot. The Mount Mitchell Museum, which shares the history of this beautiful state park, is also available to visit. Trekking poles are strongly recommended. Bring layers, as temperatures may be about 20 degrees cooler than in Lake Lure. We don’t advise bringing dogs on the longer hike because of the difficult terrain and increased risk of tripping. Please also bring a morning snack, as lunch may not be until 1 p.m.
For the longer hike, we will meet in the parking lot across from the beach at 8 a.m. for an 8:15 a.m. departure. The drive takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes, with the final 30 miles on the Blue Ridge Parkway. For the shorter hike, please meet in the same parking lot at 9:45 a.m. for a 10 a.m. departure. We expect to return to Lake Lure by 4 p.m.
Please RSVP to Val Kager at drvkager@gmail.com and indicate whether you would like to do the 1-mile or 3-mile hike. Please RSVP so we can communicate additional details, any date changes and coordinate carpools.

See their "Helene Story" on Local Business Spotlight page

Join fellow LLSC members as we celebrate the strength of this wonderful local business. If you don’t know their story, please take a look at their website below, and the Business Spotlight page here, which documents in words and pictures their resilience and recovery after losing their building and business in Helene. We are so happy they built back with the help of the community, many volunteers, and loyal customers. The owner, Jessie Callaway, will be at the event to discuss the journey of the business. We also hope to get a tour of the new riverwalk which is now under construction.
