Rafting on the French Broad Friday Oct 9
All Levels Welcome
We have tentatively scheduled a rafting trip on the French Broad River for Friday, October 9. This beautiful stretch of river in the Southern Appalachians offers approximately five miles of Class II and III rapids. The trip takes about three hours with a cost of $75 per person.
The forecast calls for a high of 65–75°F, so an afternoon trip may be our best option. We would depart from Lake Lure around 9am, for Marshall, NC, which is approximately a 1½ hour drive from Lake Lure. We can arrange carpooling as needed. The raft trip starts at the Marshall outfitter at 11:30am. We expect to return to Lake Lure around 4pm. The level of the River is one factor to watch because the French Broad is not dam fed. If the river level is too low (due to lack of rain), we may need to cancel the trip.

Birding Walk at Chimney Rock State Park

Time: 8:30-11:30
Meeting Place: To be determined once group size is known.
October is a great time to see later migrants and raptors, and right in our own backyard is Chimney Rock State Park, a highlighted birding stop in WNC.
The Annual Park Pass is $32.00 for a year; a Day Pass is $17.00; those with an Annual Pass can get discounted tickets for those who do not have one. We will coordinate this at a later time.

Vista Seekers Hike
Thursday, October 15th
Triple Falls Trail

Meeting Location: Ingles Parking Lot (Pharmacy end)
Duration: Approximately 1-hour drive to trail parking lot
Hike Length: 2.6 miles (loop); Easy to Moderate Hike
Judithe and Kerry are leading the hike on Triple Falls Trail. Triple Falls is located in DuPont State Recreational Forest and offers a unique opportunity to stand in the middle of a waterfall! A level rock surface allows room to safely enjoy the views and cascading water. A second waterfall, High Falls, will be passed along the way and offers another great view. After enjoying the view of Triple Falls with its three cascades from the main trail, a staircase leads down to a flat rock plateau between the falls. There is no swimming or wading allowed due to currents. Dogs are allowed but need to be kept on leash and out of the waterfalls. This is considered an easy to moderate hike with an elevation gain of 393 ft and should take 1.5-2 hours to complete.
Bring a lunch as there is picnic area available on the trail.

Kayak/Paddleboard on beautiful Lake Lure! We will meet at the Rumbling Bald Launch. PFD vests are required. We will have lunch afterward at a place TBD.

Vista Seekers Sunset Hike
Location: Bearwallow Mountain Trail

Sara Crunk and Nancy Nelson are leading a sunset hike up Bearwallow on October 25, which is a full moon night. The full moon is known as the Hunters Moon. Sunset is 6:20 pm so we’ll start at 4:45 pm at the trailhead. This should give us an hour to get up there and time to enjoy dinner and company before coming down the road after sunset. Bring your own picnic dinner and beverage. Dogs need to be leashed and under control because of the food. Bring something to sit on, insect spray, and something to light your way down the mountain. AT THIS TIME, we are unsure if Bearwallow Road will be open from the Lake Lure side. We might have to come at it from Edneyville....stay in touch and be sure to RSVP so we can let you know closer to the time about the best driving route and any weather-related conditions. We are not considering meeting to carpool because of the uncertainty of how we get there but of course you can carpool among yourselves. GPS works or you can contact Sara or Nancy closer to the time. Chimney Rock Village Boulders Trail

Meeting Time: 11:00 am
Meet: Public Paid Parking area behind Chimney Rock Smokehouse
This is a short (1 mile total distance) but steep hike with gorgeous views. It is rated as moderate with 272 ft of elevation gain. You should be sure-footed, able to do stairs well, and not bothered by heights.
The trail was developed in partnership with the Carolina Climbing Coalition and the trail visits beautiful bouldering areas. This is a great hike to introduce visiting family or friends to the area—it’s not a big time commitment, and food and other fun is nearby. We will eat lunch at the Smokehouse afterwards.

Join Lake Lure Yoga owner, Carla Drummond, for an evening of relaxation where we will explore techniques to bring our attention to the present moment. With an overview of mindfulness techniques, meditation, and a mind-body practice suitable for anyone, we will learn how to reduce stress and live more fully in the now. Seating will be on mats on the floor or on a chair if preferred. Following our session indoors, the event will move outside for a gathering around the fire-pit. Lake Lure Social Club Wine Around!
