& LL Green Space
Date: Monday, June 8; rain date Thursday, June 11
Time: 8am
Meet at Ingles/South (pharmacy) end of the parking lot
Duration 2-3 hours
Let's Bird Very Local and get an early start to beat the heat! Led by LLSC member, Julie Delgado, this birding walk is a great way to start or expand your birding journey by identifying our local feathered friends and the migrators passing through. On the walk we will discuss basic birding strategies, how to keep track of your sightings, attracting birds, and more! Bring binoculars if you can, a camera, a snack for the trail, water and consider downloading the Merlin app and E-bird to keep track of your sightings. The walk will be about 2 miles.
We will begin at the Dittmer-Watts end of the trails and let the birds guide our path.
Expected Birds include Blue Grosbeaks, Raptors, flycatchers and much more!
Please RSVP to julsky18@gmail.com . Be sure to RSVP so Julie can communicate in the event of a date change due to weather issues.

Roan Highlands: Carver's Gap Hike
Carver's Gap to Grassy Ridge Bald
Monday, June 15, 2026 at 8:30am; Rain date-Wednesday, June 17, 2026
Location: We will meet at the parking lot on the corner of Buffalo Creek Rd and Whitney Blvd and will carpool from there; parking at the trailhead is limited.
Meeting Time: 8:30am; Driving time to the trailhead is 1 hour, 35 minutes
This is one of the most beautiful hikes in the area, with expansive views of the surrounding mountains. The hike is on a ridgeline along the Appalachian Trail on a section of the Roan Highlands. We will cross two balds before heading up to Grassy Ridge Bald, where we will stop for lunch before heading back. The hike is moderate, at 5.1 miles with 1100ft elevation gain, but feels a bit more strenuous at 6000 feet. Throughout the meadows at the summit and along most of the trail, you’ll encounter vibrant displays of rhododendrons, flame azaleas, and a variety of wildflowers. Among them is the rare Gray’s Lily, a species indigenous to the area. Many consider this stretch one of the most beautiful sections of the entire Appalachian Trail. We saw the blooms last year, and they were truly impressive. We’ve planned this year’s hike in hopes of seeing them again at peak bloom. Since this an out and back hike, anyone who wants a shorter option can stop at one of the other two balds along the way, which still offer spectacular views.
Wear sturdy shoes and bring poles if you use them, as the trail is rocky and can have slippery spots. Also, prepare for any weather, as storms can move in quickly. The hike takes an average of 2 hours and 35 minutes to complete. Dogs are welcome but must be leashed due to the traffic on the trail during this peak bloom season. After hiking, we will plan to stop at Linville Falls Winery for a snack and beverages.
